City Tips Berlin

<< back

Berlin, Capital of Germany,  is an important centre of  politics, media, culture and science in Europe.

The metropolis is an important traffic interchange and one of the most-visited towns of the continent. Prominent institutions like the universities, research establishments, theatres and museums enjoy international recognition. Berlin is the melting point for art and cultural lovers and creative people from all over the world.

Berlin was first mentioned in 1244. The famous Berlin bear in the city is presumably originate from the Slavic settlement Berlin and his syllable "berl" (what means marsh).

Until in 1918 - where the republic was exclaimed after the end of the 1st world war, Berlin was governed by the Hohenzollern. The castles Charlottenburg and the Hunting castle in Berlin Grunewald arise from the Elector time from Elector Friedrich I. and Friedrich II.

1451 became Berlin the seat of power by electors and mark counts of Brandenburg and had to given up therefore his status as a free Hanseatic town. After the 2nd world war the city  was divided and strongly affected by the cold war between Germany west and Germany East.  The east part of Berlin became a capital of the former GDR.
The climax of the very mad east-west conflict was  the construction of the Berlin Wall in 13. Augst in 1961. After the Fall of the Wall in 1989, both parts of Berlin and both German states was reunified in 1990 as the Federal Republic of Germany. Berlin became again the capital of Germany by agreed arrangement on both sides.

Since 1991 Berlin is also the seat of the Federal Government and parliament.
