City Tips Frankfurt

<< back

Frankfurt was strongly destroyed during the 2nd world war. Afterwards the townscape had been changed radically.

Frankfurt was one of the biggest coherent Old Town in Germany with more than 4000 half-timbered houses before the 2nd world war. The house Wertheym in the driving gate is the only former half-timbered house which had survived the war.  The house Wertheym at the gate "Fahrtor" was the only one who has survived the war widely unscathed.

The today's city centre was complitely renewed in the 19th century with huge changes concerning the old structure of the city. The baroque city fortification with her big bastions which enclosed the Old Town and Neustadt since the 17th century was dragged. The embankment arrangements was created as a ring-shaped park around the old town. The construction of new building was regulated by the town planner Georg Hess. Each new building was built in the style of classicism in order to create a unique alike appereance in the new part of Frankfurt. Today you will find many nice houses and villas from the time in the style of the classicism. Later the house was constructed in the style of the Wilhelminian style, where you may find house and building in the districts of Westend, Nordend and Ostend as well as the building of the central station can testify this style.

Nowadays Frankfurt is an important European centre for finance, fairs and exhibitions as all as for office and commercial services. The town is a seat of the European central bank, the German Central Bank, the Frankfurt security stock exchange and the Frankfurt fair. Frankfurt became thanks to his central situation with airport, central station and Frankfurt an important traffic interchange in Europe.
