The free Hanseatic town Hamburg was founded in 4th century B.C. Older fix construction of buildings in the main settlement area of Hamburg testify this. The first habitation of this former settlement were people from Saxony.

Hamburg has more than 2500 bridges which make it able to cross the numerous canals, rivulets and canals. Therefore Hamburg has the most bridges in Europe behind Venice and London.
